Premiere Pro text and caption removal

How to remove text from video in Premiere Pro

A caption segment, a title inside a graphic and lettering already burned into a video need different edits. Start with the sequence: find the caption or graphic before changing any pixels. If the original video itself contains the words, choose whether to crop, conceal or reconstruct that area. The workflows below keep those decisions separate.

These instructions cover Adobe Premiere on Windows and macOS using current official help and its interface examples. Properties replaced many Essential Graphics editing controls from version 25.0. Older versions can show different panels and mask controls. The reconstruction workflow below runs in After Effects. This guide does not claim a hands-on removal test.

Quick answer

Yes, you can remove text in Premiere Pro when it remains an editable caption or graphic. Clear the selected caption or title, or edit just the words inside a graphic you need to keep. For burned-in text, crop or conceal it in Premiere, use a controlled repair such as After Effects Content-Aware Fill, or evaluate an independent online pass. A mask alone selects an area; it does not invent a clean background.

Find where the words live before choosing a tool

The same phrase may be a caption, a text field inside a graphic, or pixels in the source. Selection in the sequence and comparison with the original file tell you which operation can work.

Make the smallest edit that solves the problem

Duplicate the sequence first and use your own or authorized footage. Keep the project and original media so you can compare and undo changes without relying on a processed copy.

Keep the video and spoken audio

For an interview with captions on C1, a name graphic on V2 and video on V1, remove the unwanted C1 segment or the name in V2. Leave V1 and the audio alone. Deleting words from the Transcript tab during Text-Based Editing can remove media from the sequence; that is a different operation.

Keep the useful part of a graphic

A lower third may contain a name, colored panel and logo in one graphic clip. Clearing that whole clip removes every element it contains. If the panel and logo must stay, edit the text field or work with the source template instead.

Deliver a clean file and editable captions

For another language version, preserve the transcript or export a caption sidecar before deleting useful timing. Make a clean picture export and retain the editable project. A file with selectable captions and a file with words burned into its image are different deliverables.

Four workflows for captions, graphics and rendered text

Position the playhead where the words appear. Compare the Program Monitor with the source clip, then identify the selected track item. A title inside a nested sequence or a Motion Graphics template may require opening its source rather than repairing the picture.

1. Remove captions without cutting the video

Use caption segments in the sequence. Keep a copy of the caption content if you may need another language or a different export.

  1. Select the caption, not the transcript

Find the unwanted segment on the caption track and select it in the Timeline. For a wrong word, correct the caption instead of deleting it. The Transcript tab is not a list of removable picture overlays.

  2. Clear only the selected caption segments

Use Edit → Clear with the caption selection active. For a full set, select only that set’s caption segments, not the whole timeline. Check that video, audio and sequence duration remain unchanged. Undo immediately if any media disappears.

  3. Check caption export settings

Open Export and inspect Captions and the active caption tracks. Do not burn in a track that should be absent from the picture. If the deliverable needs no caption data either, omit embedded captions and sidecar output as well. Options depend on format. Open the finished file and check its subtitle controls and picture separately.

2. Remove a title while keeping other graphic elements

Current Premiere provides sequence-wide graphic text editing in Text → Graphics. Properties shows controls for the selected graphic. Many older tutorials place this work in Essential Graphics.

  1. Locate the text in Text → Graphics

Activate the correct sequence, open the Text panel and choose Graphics. Use track filters and timecodes to find the title. Double-click its editable text field. This is useful when the same name or label appears at several points in a long sequence.

  2. Clear or replace just the editable words

Make the text field empty if the design allows it, or replace its wording. Review the panel, logo, responsive layout and animation after the change. An empty text field may leave a background shape visible; decide whether that shape is part of the design you want.

  3. Remove the whole graphic only when appropriate

If none of the graphic is needed, select its timeline clip and use Edit → Clear. For a template with no editable field or a nested title, open the nested sequence or ask for the source template. Removing the parent clip can also remove wanted elements; importing a flattened export will not restore its layers.

3. Conceal burned-in words with a masked blur in Premiere

Use this when a visible blur is acceptable. It hides lettering rather than rebuilding the scene. Work on a representative continuous shot before treating a longer edit.

  1. Apply a blur and draw a mask

Select the video clip and apply an available blur effect from Effects. In the current toolbar, hold the Object Mask tool group and choose a Rectangle, Ellipse or Pen mask. Draw around the lettering in the Program Monitor, including its outline and shadow.

  2. Assign and refine the mask

In Effect Controls, assign the mask to the blur effect. If it appears under Unassigned Masks, drag it onto that effect. Adjust blur strength and mask feathering or expansion so readable edges do not remain. If you mask Opacity instead, you may reveal a hole rather than blur the text.

  3. Check movement and every cut

Use the mask’s tracking controls when needed, then inspect and correct its position across the whole shot. A screen-fixed caption may need a fixed region; text attached to a moving sign may need tracking. Split at shot changes and review mask edges at full viewing size. Menus and effect names can differ in older versions.

4. Reconstruct a region in After Effects

Content-Aware Fill in this workflow belongs to After Effects. You need access to that application and compatible installations for Dynamic Link. Save a copy before replacing a timeline clip.

  1. Send a short shot to After Effects

In Premiere, select the relevant clip and use Replace With After Effects Composition from its context menu, then save the After Effects project. Work on one continuous shot rather than a caption strip spanning unrelated cuts.

  2. Create a transparent target area

In After Effects, mask the words and their shadow, set the mask to Subtract, and animate the mask path if necessary. Check that the transparent region covers the lettering throughout. Open Window → Content-Aware Fill.

  3. Generate and inspect the fill

Choose a suitable Fill Method and Range, then Generate Fill Layer. Review the reconstructed region in motion. If texture or lighting fails, Adobe documents using a reference frame to guide the fill. Save the project and keep its generated image sequence assets together.

  4. Return to Premiere and verify the edit

Allow the linked composition to update, then check the complete shot, transitions and audio. Complex compositions can preview slowly. If linking is impractical, render a compatible intermediate for import and compare its timing. Do not judge a moving repair from a single still frame.

A review checklist for the final deliverable

Review the exported file independently of the project. A clean Program Monitor at one timecode does not show what happens when a caption changes or the subject moves behind it.

Confirm the exact duration and listen for audio cuts or synchronization changes.
Inspect every caption transition, shot boundary and interval without text; check other labels and logos.
Keep the source project and caption sidecar where needed, and verify the export contains the intended caption tracks.

Choose a method for burned-in text

Choose by the shot and required output. Methods that hide text are useful when the change is acceptable, while reconstruction needs more careful review.

Crop an expendable border

Apply Crop from Effects to the video clip, then adjust its boundaries in Effect Controls. Check the complete line disappears throughout the shot and that the subject still fits the delivery format. A lower caption near the edge is a better candidate than a title across the center.

Cover or patch a stable region

Place a designed panel or clean source region above the video, with a mask where appropriate. Match scale, color, grain and motion. A frozen patch over moving water or a camera pan can look stuck in place. If no convincing clean region exists, choose another approach.

Blur a selected area

Use the masked-blur workflow above when the visible alteration suits the edit. Increase coverage for shadows and strokes, and check tracking. Blur conceals the region; the original wording may remain readable if coverage or strength is insufficient.

Reconstruct a shot

The After Effects workflow above estimates replacement detail using Content-Aware Fill. It can keep the composition but can also produce soft texture, halos or temporal changes. Review motion and any overlap with faces, hands or product details before accepting it.

Use an independent online repair

ObjectRemover accepts constant-frame-rate MP4 or MOV up to 100 MB, 1080p and 60 fps. Remove text detects writing automatically, without a prompt or local selection box. To request one element while other writing should stay, consider Remove objects with a specific description; it is not a protection mask. Billing is one credit per billable second, rounded up; eligible verified accounts receive 3 trial credits. Keep original audio is selected by default. Check the quote before processing and inspect the download before importing it into Premiere. There is no project integration.

When a selection, export or repair goes wrong

Return to the untouched source or sequence copy before trying a different approach. A source check often resolves the issue faster than another processing pass.

Reconstruction cannot prove hidden detail

Text can cover a face, fine print or a moving hand. The missing detail may not exist in the file. A reconstructed area is an estimate, and repeated processing can compound errors. A clean original is preferable when exact visual detail matters.

Blur and cropping change the deliverable

Blur leaves a visibly altered area. Cropping removes part of the composition and can force scaling. Neither reveals the original scene behind lettering. Choose against your delivery aspect ratio and the details the viewer needs.

Save the edit and its dependencies

Keep the sequence copy, original media, any After Effects project and generated fill assets. A linked composition can go offline when files are moved. Avoid replacing the only source or deleting caption timing before preserving what you may reuse.

Premiere Pro text removal questions

Why is text visible after I disable the caption track?

Look for another caption track, a graphic on a video track, a nested sequence or lettering in the source file. Some Program Monitor overlays are viewing aids, so compare a short export before deciding the pixels need repair.

Where is Essential Graphics in newer Premiere versions?

From Premiere 25.0, many editing controls moved to Properties. Use Text → Graphics to locate editable text in the sequence. The panel shown depends on the selected item; a video selection does not expose all the controls of a title graphic.

Is deleting transcript text the same as removing subtitles?

No. Text-Based Editing can remove matching media from the sequence. Select actual caption segments or editable graphic text to change an overlay while preserving the interview and its spoken audio.

Does a mask remove text without blur?

A mask defines where an effect or transparency applies. A clean patch, a suitable underlying layer or reconstruction must supply replacement imagery. Simply masking a single flattened video may expose transparency or black rather than a clean background.

Can ObjectRemover edit a Premiere project?

No. Upload a supported MP4 or MOV export and download the result. It does not open .prproj files, edit caption tracks, relink media or update the timeline through a plugin.

Only the rendered video is available?

Open the separate text-removal tool for supported MP4 or MOV files. Review the selected mode, duration and quote, then check the complete download before returning it to Premiere.
